Resting in God: A Teacher’s Back-to-School Strategy
As the back-to-school season kicks into gear, it’s easy for teachers to feel overwhelmed by the mounting tasks and responsibilities. Finding time to rest might seem impossible with lesson planning, classroom setup, and administrative duties vying for your attention. Yet, in these hectic times, we need to be intentional about rest.
This month, the Soul Care Society is focusing on the concept of divine rest. This isn’t just about physical rest but finding a deeper, spiritual rest that can only come from God. I’ve been working on this in my own life—learning to rest in God, keep the Sabbath holy, and trust that He provides the time I need during the other six days of the week. (I’m definitely a work in progress!)
In the Soul Care Society, we’re meditating on our Mark 2:27 this month:
“Then He said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.’”
This verse is a powerful reminder that the Sabbath is a gift from God, designed to meet our needs, not just another rule to follow. As I reflected on this verse, I remembered watching this scene in The Chosen.
Jesus emphasizes the Sabbath’s importance for our well-being. The Pharisees of His time were so focused on the law that they missed the spirit of it—the rest and connection with God that the Sabbath was meant to foster. (They also missed the fact that the whole reason they observed the Sabbath was for the very MAN in front of them!)
God Himself set the example in Genesis 2:2-3, where He rested after six days of creation. If God, who is all-powerful, chose to rest, how much more do we, in our human limitations, need to embrace this divine gift?
As teachers, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of the new school year, but I encourage you to make time for rest—not just for your body but for your soul. Take this as a reminder to disconnect from the busyness and reconnect with God, even if just for a short time each day.
