How to Thrive in a Toxic Work Environment: Biblical Principles for K-12 Teachers

It has never been more difficult to be a teacher. From pandemic teaching to unprecedented behavior issues and everything in between, it’s no wonder so many are leaving the profession.

As a former middle school teacher, I know firsthand the challenges of a toxic work environment. I remember a principal I once had that was so feared that teachers would hide from her. We received constant criticism; staying out of her way was best. Combine that with toxic negativity from teachers who talked of nothing else, and I had nowhere to go. It was a toxic work environment! (I was so grateful to be in a portable that year!)

So what do you do when the work environment becomes toxic? Is your only choice to leave?

Don’t lose hope! There are things you can do (and more specifically, things HE can do! 🙌). These Biblical principles will help K-12 teachers thrive in a toxic work environment.

Pray for Guidance and Wisdom

Before you make any decisions, go to God in prayer!

If teaching was a calling, then your mission field is in the classroom. Don’t abandon your mission without direction from the one who placed you there.

There is purpose in everything you are going through. Allow God to take control and direct your steps.

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”
‭‭- Psalms‬ ‭32‬:‭8‬

Pray for guidance and wisdom so that you can make a Spirit-led decision.

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
‭‭- Proverbs‬ ‭2‬:‭6‬

Forgiveness

With negativity comes bitterness and animosity. We must remember to have a forgiving heart, as Christ has forgiven us.

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
‭‭- Ephesians‬ ‭4‬:‭32‬

Remember to ask for forgiveness for anything you have contributed to the situation, forgive others who may have made you angry or disappointed you, and pray for God to soften their hearts.

With humble hearts, your situation can be healed.

Avoid Toxic Conversations

This one is tough, but you need to set clear boundaries for yourself. Toxic negativity can infiltrate your mind and your heart, so set yourself apart. If your teacher friends like to gossip and complain, remove yourself from the conversation. If necessary, politely tell them you refuse to participate in negative conversations.

Focus on Your Mission

If the classroom is your mission field (or wherever you work), focus on the mission at hand. Be the light, even when it feels like a very dark place.

“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”
‭‭- Romans‬ ‭12‬:‭6‬-‭8‬

You were chosen, sister! Remember that! Be the hands and feet; let the light of Jesus shine through you and your actions.

Focus on your work. Be diligent and love your students and co-workers, as Christ loves us.

Seek Support

It’s easy to feel like you have to give in to the toxicity of the majority so that you are not alone. Not only is God going before you, beside you, and after you, but you have a church family that is here to support you. Seek support from family, friends, and other colleagues. If necessary, seek the help of a counselor. Never feel like you have to go it alone.

I’d love to pray for you! Send me a prayer request.

Thriving in a toxic work environment is never easy! But don’t lose sight of the bigger picture. This present trouble is temporary! You are a child of God with an inheritance that far exceeds anything you can imagine on this earth. Keep God at the center of your life, and He will guide you and refine you!
